I just took a peek at the ‘rare’ trailer for Fright Night 2: New Blood (2013) (via Arrow in the Head), the presumed sequel (?) to the underrated 2011 remake. All I can think to say is… huh?
I’m just confused. All the characters are played by different actors. Nothing surprising there for a DtV horror movie; however, it just doesn’t look like a sequel at all. It looks like a re-imagined reboot of the 1985 original (one of my very favorite horror flicks, by the way). The same group of characters are present: Charlie, Ed, Amy, Peter Vincent and ‘Gerri,’ who is now a sexy female vampire. Oh, it takes place abroad somewhere.
So…. what’s the point of this movie? Now, I typically don’t mind remakes. I’ve said this before : some remakes are good, some are bad (like all movies). But this is pretty unnecessary. It’s the same story (they even use some of the exact dialogue, based on the trailer) — adding in a few tweaks (i.e. Gerri’s gender, location) — under the guise of being a DtV sequel.
Take a look for yourselves. Discussion is welcome.
Synopsis (via Arrow in the Head):
When high school student Charlie attends a study abroad program with his horror obsessed friend “Evil” Ed and ex-girlfriend AMY in Romania, he soon discovers their young attractive professor Gerri (Jaime Murray) is a real life vampire. Too bad no one believes him. In fact, Evil Ed finds it amusing and it only feeds his vampire obsession. When Gerri turns Ed, Charlie seeks out Peter Vincent, the infamous vampire hunter (well, he plays one on TV) who is in Romania filming his show “Fright Night,” to teach him how to take down Gerri before she gets to Amy, who’s blood will cure Gerri of spending eternity as a vampire.
And for the record, I have no doubt we’ll inevitably watch this.
